We bought this book when visiting Haydock Racecourse to do a review. Johnny Winnall (co-author) had a stand there and he was promoting and selling the book, together with his wife. He also kindly signed our book so, it’s a collector’s edition!

The joint authors, David Watts & Johnny Winall, are former bookmakers who have decided to tell their tales of years working in the betting rings of the racecourse of Britain.

They give you an inside look at, well, let’s just say, surprising events that some people in the horse racing industry would rather remain hidden. Their exhilarating journey includes some jaw-dropping tales from the Royal Ascot, Cheltenham Festival, and the Grand National. The book reveals how bookmakers think and how to increase your chances of winning, in addition to providing a refreshingly honest account of some disastrous business dealings. A fascinating look into the world of gambling and sports. Anyone who enjoys a bet should read "Mug Bookies," which is enlightening to say the least. A recommended read!

Racecourse Advisor Overall Rating:   7/10

PS: Johnny Winall also has a horse with the same name as the book “Mug Bookies” in training with Joe Ponting at his Gloucester stables. At the time of writing, it has had two runs in bumpers. One at Doncaster (finishing 8th out of 13 runners) and the other at Wetherby (finishing 5th out of 14 runners). So, it does appear to have some potential. Good luck Johnny!
